FISHING GEAR

Seine

Fishery

The local name for the fishing gear used in this fishery is “jonquiller” or “xarxa jonquillera”. In effect, it is a seine, a fishing technique that involves catching the fish by surrounding them with a wall of netting. The seine is made up of a cone-shaped body, two long wings and a bag. The most important elements for seine capture efficiency are the long lines extending from the wings, used to surround a large area.

This fishery is located on the Balearic Islands, to the east of the Spanish coast.

STRENGTHS

POINTS FOR IMPROVEMENT

  • Management plan in place allowingthe control of exploitation rates
  • Week impact on habitats
  • Selective gear: limited risk of unwanted by-catch
  • Recent stock evaluation available
  • Little knowledge about status of stocks
  • Constant but low biomass levels
  • High fishing mortality: 35% decrease in fishing activity to achieve MSY
  • Lack of evidence of effectiveness of management plan
