Fishery

This fishery uses purse seines to catch anchovy and sardine by surrounding the stock with a wall of netting. Seine fishers generally operate at night. Fishermen mostly use sonar to locate schools of fish, determine their species and to figure out the approximate size. A small vessel dragged behind the main vessel is used as a light source to attract the fish.

This fishery operates in the central and northern parts of the GSA 6, in Valencian and Catalan waters.

STRENGTHS

POINTS FOR IMPROVEMENT

  • Selective gear with low impact on benthic habitats
  • Low risk of unwanted by-catch such as horse mackerel, Mediterranean horse mackerel, round sardinella and bogue
  • There are formal stock assessments for both species
  • Sardine stock status is in poor condition, biomass is in decline and fishing mortality is above MSY
  • Current management system does not limit catches as both stocks approach their biological limits
  • Lack of defined harvest control rules
  • Management system is not reviewed and evaluated
  • Lack of information about interactions with turtles and marine mammal species
