Fishery

The Palamos red shrimp fishery uses demersal trawling which involves dragging a fishing gear across the sea floor.

This fishery is especially important in Catalonia (north-eastern Spain). In the north of this region, near Palamos, the fishery operates along submarine canyons whose geomorphology influences the ecological behaviour of this species.

Pre-assessment results

Results of the MSC pre-assessment, conducted using the precautionary principle (bar filled = benchmark achieved). Only some of the data is presented here. For a full listing of the results, please visit the Medfish website.

STRENGTHS

POINTS FOR IMPROVEMENT

  • Reference points to be defined
  • High levels of knowledge and stock monitoring – periodic scientific assessments
  • Spacial and temporal closures in place
  • Changeover to semi-pelagic trawling to limit the impact on fish habitats
  • Insufficient knowledge about the impact of bottom trawl fishing on the ecosystem
  • Stock assessments for by-catch species not available
  • Insufficient evidence to evaluate the impact of fisheries on fishing stock areas: deep canyons regarded as vulnerable marine ecosystems
